Overview

Know your skin, and know when something changes

Most moles are entirely harmless. The difficulty is that change is what matters most, and change is hard to judge from memory alone. A mole you see every day in the mirror can alter slowly enough that you never notice.

MAP My Mole is a structured assessment of your moles and skin lesions. Your skin is examined by a trained clinician, areas of concern are photographed, and those images are kept on record so that any future change can be compared against a clear baseline rather than a recollection.

This is a screening and monitoring service, not a diagnosis. Where a lesion has features that warrant a specialist opinion, we will tell you plainly and help you arrange onward referral, whether privately or through your GP.

  • A full, unhurried look at moles and skin lesions
  • Photographic record so changes can be compared over time
  • Clear explanation of what we can see and what it means
  • Onward referral arranged if a specialist opinion is needed
  • Practical advice on sun protection and self-checking
  • Carried out by NHS-trained clinicians in a CQC-registered clinic

How it works

How it works

A straightforward appointment with time to look properly and time to talk through what we find.

01

History and concerns

We discuss your skin history, sun exposure, family history, and any specific moles you have noticed or are worried about.

02

Skin examination

Your skin is examined by a trained clinician, with particular attention to any lesion you have raised and to areas that are harder to see yourself.

03

Imaging

Moles and lesions of note are photographed and recorded, creating a baseline that future appointments can be compared against.

04

Findings explained

We talk you through what we have seen, in plain language, along with what is reassuring and what, if anything, warrants a closer look.

05

Next steps

Where appropriate we arrange onward referral for a specialist opinion, or agree a sensible interval for review.

Your safety

Suitability & what to expect

A medical assessment, delivered to medical standards. Here’s who it suits and what it can and cannot tell you.

Is it right for you?

Adults who want their moles checked and recorded, particularly those with a large number of moles, fair skin, a history of significant sun exposure or sunburn, or a personal or family history of skin cancer. Also suitable for anyone who has noticed a change in a mole and wants it looked at properly.

Please tell us at your appointment

This is a screening and monitoring service and does not provide a diagnosis. It is not a substitute for urgent medical assessment. If you have a lesion that is bleeding, ulcerated, growing quickly, or otherwise causing you concern, please contact your GP without delay rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

After your appointment

Continue to check your skin yourself between appointments
Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily and avoid sunbeds
Photograph anything you are unsure about so you have your own record
Contact us or your GP promptly if a mole changes before your next review
Attend any onward referral arranged for you

Common questions

Common questions

Can you tell me whether a mole is cancerous?

No. This is a screening and monitoring service, not a diagnostic one. A definitive diagnosis requires specialist assessment and, in most cases, a biopsy. What we can do is examine your skin carefully, record what we see, and tell you honestly if something warrants a specialist opinion, then help you arrange it.

What happens if you find something concerning?

We will explain what we have seen and why it needs a closer look, and help you arrange onward referral, either privately or through your GP. We will not leave you to work out the next step on your own.

Why photograph my moles?

Because change over time is the single most useful signal, and memory is unreliable. A dated image gives a clear baseline, so at your next appointment we are comparing like with like rather than relying on recollection.

How often should I be checked?

Annually suits most people. If you have a large number of moles, a history of skin cancer, or a lesion we want to keep an eye on, your clinician may suggest a shorter interval.

What should I bring or do beforehand?

Come without makeup on any area you would like examined, and avoid fake tan beforehand as it can obscure the skin. If there is a specific mole worrying you, make a note of when you first noticed it and how it has changed.

Should I still check my own skin?

Yes, absolutely. Regular self-checking between appointments is important. If you notice a mole changing in size, shape or colour, or one that itches, bleeds or will not heal, seek advice promptly rather than waiting for your next review.
